Intent

At Bayards-Hill Primary we understand the immense value that technology plays in supporting the Computing and whole school curriculum, the day to day life of the school and the prevalent role it plays in our children's lives as they get older. Technology provides a range of advantages, such as: opportunities for collaborative engagement with a range of sources, encourage pupil engagement, provide access to rich content, develop and aid in conceptual understanding of new ideas and be flexible to support a range of student needs. 

Our Computing curriculum is made up of several modules to ensure full coverage of the National curriculum, these contain knowledge organisers that are shared with the children at the start of each module, detailing the skills they will be developing. The framework is built on clear progression of computing skills from year R through to year 6, therefore our children will progress to secondary education being computing literate.

Implementation

Computing is delivered through the use of RLT core teaching principles as well as Rosenshines principles which is the basis of high quality teaching. 

The Computing curriculum is delivered through the scheme Purple Mash. Each module begins revisiting and reviewing previously learnt information to ensure that misconceptions are identified and corrected. 

In EYFS and Nursery, computing is accessed through the ‘Understanding the world’ area of learning. This is presented through continuous provision based on the children's interest. Technology is further modelled to the children through the use of ipads and sharing screens, allowing the children to see how to access the internet in a safe manner. 

From years 1 to 6, Computing is taught for an hour each week in classroom lessons, as well as this, the children have opportunities to consolidate their understanding through the use of technology in other subjects. Additionally, Computing is promoted in and out of school by use of google classroom to set homework, link children at home with online learning and using technology to communicate with external sources or visitors. 

The Computing framework provides the opportunity to assess children's understanding against the National Curriculum objectives.

Impact

Impact will be measured through pupil engagement and self-confidence in relation to being able to competently use their technology skills regularly. Furthermore, it will be measured by the children's ability to discuss different computing elements, instruct on how these apply to their learning but also in day to day life and be able to apply the skills cross curricularly. 

Importantly, the children will also be able to demonstrate a love of computing that has been cultivated through accurate teaching of the progression of skills from Reception to Year 6.

Aims

Our aim is for all children at Bayards-Hill Primary to develop computational skills and creativity. We understand that computer science is the core of the Computing curriculum. The Computing scheme Purple Mash underpins all computing teaching at Bayards-hill providing accurate provision for all children to build knowledge and develop technology skills. Furthermore, it allows us to be cross curricular with other core and foundation subjects.

Inclusion and SEND

At Bayards Hill Primary School, every teacher is a teacher of SEND. As such, inclusion is a thread that runs through every area of the school enhanced by collaboration between senior leaders, teachers, support staff, external agencies, parents and most importantly, the child. 

All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. Lessons are planned with appropriate scaffolds, adjustments and modifications to ensure that there are no barriers to achievement and progress.

Assessment

Progress is measured by regular teacher assessments. This takes place at the end of each module and subsequently the following data is analysed to influence teachers subject content and to review which areas need more coverage. 

There are excel spreadsheets available from the Computing framework for teachers to accurately record children's competency in each module.
